New York-based Rail Europe is offering a 20% discount on its first-class rail pass that allows travel to France on the country’s national rail network. The sale is good for multiday or one-day tickets but must be purchased by the end of April.

The deal: Discount prices on first-class rail passes start at $ 226 for a three-day adult ticket and $ 122 for a day pass. Passes for children also are on sale starting at $ 113 for the three-day pass and $ 61 for a day pass. The sale price is good for multiday passes that allow three to nine days of travel in France within a one-month period.

When: The offer is good for pass purchases between April 9 and 30, subject to availability.

Details: The savings provide a kind of upgrade for Rail Pass users. For example, a second-class adult rail pass costs $ 230, more than the first-class sale price.

I asked a spokeswoman about how to make the best of the $ 122 day pass. She suggested this city-hopping itinerary that would fill a day: Paris to Lyon, then on to Montpellier, Toulouse, Bordeaux and back to Paris.
